Banned from the Board to Wanting a Seat at The Table: Mother of Sexual Assault Victim Announces Candidacy for Hampton School Board
After board chair weaponizes the school board, Nikia Miller looks to make changes to protect Hampton Children
18 July 2022 — Hampton, Virginia — Nikia Miller is ecstatic to announce her candidacy for Hampton School Board.
After a family tragedy, Mrs. Miller realizes that the priorities of the Hampton School Board do not align with what is best for the teachers, students, parents and community of Hampton City Schools. “The school system has the responsibility to serve each of the subsets of our community — not the other way around. Whereas some school board members are looking to use the school board as a launching pad for other ambitions, my interests are simple — serve our children so that they can be contributors to our community and make great impact wherever it is that they land in the future,” Miller says.
Miller, a lifelong resident of the city of Hampton, a wife and military spouse of 17 years and a mother of three (one being a special education student), has continuously been an active fixture in her community. As a business owner, graphic designer and brand strategist, and a member of the Board of Directors for New Mercies Transitional Housing, Mrs. Miller also serves on the Administrative Board for Breaking the Silence Advocacy Global Inc., an organization that provides emergency services for victims of sexual assault.
After Miller’s daughter was violently sexually assaulted by another student in her elementary school, Mrs. Miller has been focused on changing the narrative for students in the district. She has passionately spoken at school board meetings, engaged in focus groups and conversations with parents, teachers, and students throughout the district, and developed strategic initiatives to improve conditions in Hampton City Schools as a whole.
Mrs. Miller’s key focal points once elected are to bring Hampton City Schools up to full Title IX compliance, to improve special education across the district (HCS currently has at least three federal OCR complaints on record for failures in their special education program), to enact a parent liaison program for parents who are new to the child study process, to support dual enrollment for any student whose caseload can support it, regardless of academy, to enrich arts education, to advocate for a civics education class for all seniors, and to investigate ways to fill vacancies within the district with robust talent acquisition and creative pilot programs that will drive long term retention.
